Default Images of Acer's Ultrabook leak

Images of Acer's Ultrabook leak by VR-Zone.com

Although we're still a couple of months away from the expect launch of Intel's so called Ultrabook platform, we've already seen Asus' take back at Computex and now the first pictures of what should be Acer's first entry into the Ultrabook market space have made an appearance. Apparently Acer's Ultrabook will be called the Aspire 3951, although we're really hoping that Acer will come up with a slightly more interesting brand name before the launch, as it really says nothing about what at least on paper looks like a really neat little machine.

The Aspire 3951 is said to be a mere 13mm thin and weighing in at 1.4kg which isn't half bad for a 13-inch notebook. The design is borrow quite a bit from Apple's MacBook Air, although it's by no means a blatant copy. The core specifications are still missing, but it will without a doubt sport one of Intel's ULV Core i processors and matching small form factor chipset, the QS67 which measures 22x22mm compared to 25x25mm for Intel's standard mobile chipsets.

What struck us as a bit odd is that the source points out that SSD is optional and that it will come with a standard hard drive instead, although the choice will be between a 250 and 500GB drive. Currently there are no 500GB 1.8-inch drives to our knowledge, so judging by that Acer has managed to find room for a 2.5-inch drive inside the Aspire 3951, even though it's likely to be a 7mm tall drive. As far as SSD options are concerned, there's only one and that's a 160GB model.

The only side mounted ports appear to be a memory card slot and a single 3.5mm audio jack while the remaining ports are all located around the back. From what we can tell from the pictures we're looking at a DisplayPort, or more like an HDMI port and a pair if USB 3.0 ports, hopefully of the 3.0 variety and that's it. The only other known inclusion is low-power Bluetooth 4.0 support, but good luck finding any compatible peripherals at the moment.

The keyboard is similar in design to that used in Acer's most recent TimeLineX models, although the touch pad has grown significantly and it doesn't appear to have any buttons. Acer is also said to have implemented a feature which allows the notebook to resume from sleep in a mere 1.7 seconds, although we presume this is part of what Intel has done to make the Ultrabook platform appealing. The Aspire 3951 is said to offer 6h battery life with an interesting 30 days' worth of standby power, something unheard of so far when it comes to notebooks.

If this is a sign of what's to come, then we can't wait to see what Acer's competitors will be showing off. Compared to Intel's unsuccessful CULV platform it looks like we've finally reached a point in time where a thin and light Windows powered notebook with decent battery life and performance is about to become reality. Head over to the source link for plenty more pictures.
