Short and 'low budget' films

In a scene from "Afternoon Delight," Jorge Sebastian Ponce de Leon (left) and Graciano Jose Pal frown after greeting a grumpy old woman while playing basketball on a street in Amigo Subdivision. The short film by Prof. Jonah Lim of the School of Communication was shortlisted for screening at the Raetihi Film Festival in New Zealand.
Winning the Best Foreign Film in San Francisco, California did not entail a huge budget for Jonah Lim,
a film and audio-visual communication professor of the Silliman University School of Communication, in Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros.
"Low-budget" seems to be a key factor in most of his over 25 short films. To avoid having to pay talent fees for his class project in grad school in 2000, he included his parents - both retirees and now in their 70s -- in the cast for a short film Social Cancer. That time, the Lims were conveniently based in Orange County, California where Chapman University is located.
"I was always looking for ways where I would keep the budget at a minimum," Jonah recalls with a smile.
But "low budget" does not necessarily mean poor quality, as evidenced by his films that have been so far cited in international filmfests, or screened for international audiences in Toronto, California, Burma; for national audiences like the Cultural Center of the Philippines, GMA 7, IBC 13, for the local SkyCable, and various schools in Dumaguete City.
Late last year, the same film
Kaibigan was screened as a nominee for Best Feature Film in the Sabaoth International Film Fest in Milan, Italy. Silliman University partially funded Lim's trip to Milan.
Another short film,
Afternoon Delight, was an official selection in last year's Raetihi Film Fest in New Zealand, and in the Eksperimento Film & Video Festival in Manila. It was about a woman who realized that the people she hated were the same ones who ended up helping her.
His grad school project Social Cancer was also the 2002 Eksperimento official selection.
Lim's master's thesis at Chapman University,
Rescue in F Minor got the Jury Citation for Short Fiction during the 2001 Eksperimento Film & Video Fest, and was in the official selection of the 2001 Cinemanila International Filmfest. It was about a man who accidentally killed his younger brother and then recovered with the help of a physically-abused boy.
"The various awards and citations only make me want to create more," said Lim. And because the Dumaguete lifestyle seems hiyang to this Manila-born and Manila-bred filmmaker who abhors the rat-race, he said he will continue to produce more films on the side, while teaching eager mass communication students the ropes of film-making.
A full-length (1.5 hours) feature film is now on the drawing board, for which he plans to continue to experiment with non-mainstream, non-studio production.
"I will continue to work on universal themes of human relationships, the family, positive values which I believe are attractive to cross-cultural audiences," Lim said.
He also plans to continue to conduct workshops for organizations, and help them with their film and video projects through documentaries or narratives.
"I'd be happy to know that my students in class, or the participants in my workshops, will have learned from me enough to be able to effectively apply the basics of film and video production," the independent filmmaker said.
For starters last year,
Pagkatapos ng Ulan, a short film created and directed at Silliman by his TV Production student Fel Brillantes, won the Grand Jury Prize during the 4th Eksperimento Filmfest.*IFP
