If You Cheat On Your Spouse...Are You A Bad Parent?

I was listening to the radio this morning and they were discussing this topic as a result of a recent episode of The View. Apparently Joy was arguing this topic with Elizabeth and I'm inclined to agree with Joy.

Her argument was that if you cheat on your spouse, of course you are a jerk, loser, cheat, liar, etc...but that it does NOT make you a bad parent and that those two things are separate.

Elizabeth's "argument" was - how can you be a good parent if you don't have good morals.

Joy went on to argue that if a parent cheats on their taxes, does that make them a bad parent? If they steal/embezzle/etc. does that qualify?

In my opinion, these are matters that are no doubt reprehensible, but I see them as being:

1. None of the child's business. If a marriage breaks up and your 12 year old child asks why, you don't need to explain to them that mommy cheated on daddy or vice versa. This knowledge, at this time, has no business in their world.

2. A definite indicator of the person's morals that *could* (note "could...not WILL) lead to continued bad parenting down the road.

Anyway, they were getting quite heated on the View, so I thought this might be an interesting topic to discuss.

No. My grandfather cheated on my grandmother and she knew it. I noticed this when they were in their 60's or 70's na so tigulang na, but my grandfather has been doing it since her youngest daughters were still kids. He was always travelling but still would come home to my grandmother, they would talk, they appear very gentle with each other.

So anyway, I don't think cheating makes a person a bad parent. In the case of my grandfather, he continued supporting his children emotionally and financially and all of his children adored him and looked up to him. He had his grave ready before he died in the land where he raised his family and left all properties to his children.

Pero wa lang ko kasabot.
It seems that marrying a good man is no guarantee for complete fidelity.
