Benchmarks are used to guage your PC's preformance. There are so many types but for most people 3DMark05, 3DMark03 Build 360, AquaMark3 and PCMark04 are very popular. If you want stubility apps you can also try Prime95 and Memtest86.

You can get them at this link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads4.html

    Hope this helps

the better question to ask is: what benchmarking software is good for a certain benchmark?
like if you wanna know how your rig performs on games, then you can use 3dMark03/05
if you wanna know the raw power of your system you can use sisoft sandra
if you wanna know how fast your processor crunches numbers, you can use superPIĀ* :mrgreen

prime95 is originally designed for distributed computing of the next largest prime number... it is now usually used to test how stable your system is after overclocking. if it doesnt generate a warning or error running prime95 torture test (100% cpu usage)for several hours then you could say your system is fairly stable.
