A NURSE was killed and six of her companions were
injured yesterday after a man, driving allegedly under the
influence of alcohol, rammed his pick-up into an
ambulance. The ambulance was carrying a patient on its way to the
Mactan-Cebu International Airport past midnight at the
corner of M.J. Cuenco and Juan Luna Aves. Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or
videos. Trecie Abaño, 44, a Filipina nurse based in Singapore,
was thrown several meters from the ambulance. “Paglabang nako, nabantayan gyud namo nga kusog
kaayo (When we crossed the intersection, we saw how
fast he was going),” ambulance driver Juan Cabigas told
ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol. Among the injured, apart from Cabigas, were 38-year-old
San Diego, California resident Jasmin Michael, 37-year-
old Dr. Mah Si Chong, and three paramedics, Lester
Milan, 25, Roy Jumaoas, 25, and Sayyio Datukon, 28. The Toyota Hi-lux (YHK-500), driven by Anthony
Logarta, 20, crashed into the rear of the Chong Hua
Hospital ambulance (YHR-911), causing it to swerve into
the other lane. “Wala mi kakita nga ni-agi ang ambulansya kay wa man
nitingog (We didn’t see the ambulance because its siren
was off),” Logarta told TV Patrol. His companions were not hurt. But Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem, chairman of the City
Traffic Operations Management Board, said the
ambulance had its siren on and its emergency lights were
flashing. He said that a test showed Logarta was positive of
alcohol intake. Logarta’s pick-up continued running until it stopped
when it hit a taxi (GLX-890), driven by Ricardo Torsino. Logarta was charged with reckless imprudence resulting
in homicide and serious damage to property. “Shocked gyud mi because she just returned to Cebu
after 12 years. She was really excited to come home,”
Jessica Abaño Selisana, a sister of victim, told Sun.Star
Cebu in an interview. “Kinabuhi ni tawn, dili ra mabayran (Nothing can make
up for the loss of a life),” nephew Mark Selisana said. Chong Hua Hospital is reportedly planning to file a case
against Logarta for the damage to the ambulance. Jakosalem said the injured people were already
discharged from the hospital, except for Cabigas and
Michael. Michael is currently receiving treatment in the intensive
care unit of Chong Hua, not because of injuries from the
accident, but for her ailment. Abano’s wake is at the St. Peter’s Memorial Chapel.
