It's funny how one product can lead to a new and quite different product and in the case of Sapphire the company feels that it's Vapor-X graphics card coolers have been so popular that it's highly likely that we'll see CPU coolers using the Vapor-X technology from the company. As such the company was demoing a new cooler at CeBIT which is very likely to go into mass production sometime in the near future.At first sight the prototype Vapor-X cooler doesn't look all that different from your average over-sized CPU cooler, in fact, it could easily be mistaken for a cooler from someone like Cooler Master or Thermal Take. There are four fairly average heatpipes running from the base of the cooler to the fins on the heatsinks and there are a pair of 120mm fans and various bits of plastic shrouding to make the cooler look funky.
However, none of this would make the new Sapphire cooler all that different from what's already out there and if you're keyed into what Sapphire's Vapor-X technology is, you'll notice that we so far have omitted a crucial part, the vapor chamber. Rather than using a standard metal plat for the base of the cooler, Sapphire is using a vapor chamber onto which the heatpipes are attached.
It's not an entirely unique idea, as Asetek created something similar some years ago, although in their case the vapor chamber was directly connected to the heatpipes and it was far too sensitive as to how the cooler was installed. What sapphire has managed to do by using a sealed vapor chamber is to create a cooler that is less sensitive to which direction it's installed while still being able to draw the heat away quickly from the vapor chamber with the help of the heatpipes as secondary cooling setup. It'll be interesting so see how well this cooler performs compared to competing solutions that rely solely on heatpipes, once Sapphire brings it to retail.
