Quake kills at least 2,900 in Indonesia

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia - A powerful earthquake flattened homes and hotels in central Indonesia early Saturday as people slept, killing at least 2,900 and injuring thousands more in the nation's worst disaster since the 2004 tsunami.

The magnitude-6.2 quake struck at 5:54 a.m. near the ancient city of Yogyakarta, 250 miles east of the capital, Jakarta. It was centered about six miles below the surface, theÂ* Â* Â*U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake's epicenter was close to the rumbling Mount Merapi volcano, and activity increased soon after the temblor. A large burst spewed hot clouds and sent debris cascading some two miles down its western flank.

RP comes to aid of quake victims

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered the immediate deployment of a humanitarian team to Indonesia, where a 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed at least 3,000 people and displaced more than 200,000 others.

“The government shall deploy a humanitarian team soon to work side by side with the global relief effort. We have a duty to help our neighbors as well as the whole of humanity in times like these,� the President said.

The team will be composed of doctors, nurses and members of the Armed Forces who can help in the ongoing search and rescue operations in the central Indonesian island of Java.

President Arroyo personally sent a message of condolences to her Indonesian counterpart, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, yesterday morning.

With tragedies like this, different countries lend their hands to help the victims, like us, we recieved different helps from different countires during the latest tragedy, the Leyte landslide. Maybe this time it's our turn to lend our hands to the victims atleast in this little ways we can share our sympathy with them.....

My college professor once told his class, earthquake is good for the earth, but not good for the people.

Let us be reminded that we should also be prepared for any calamity that we might be encountering in the future. Maybe we could start preparing today to prevent any great harm that may happen should we face such natural calamities in the near future. We should start checking highly populated establishments such as malls, high rise buildings, schools, churches and recreation areas because these areas are those which are prone to be greatly affected in case something unfortunate happens.
