MANILA, Philippines -- Senators are outraged by the plan of the Philippine National Police to inspect their offices in search of bugging devices or dangerous materials.
Most of the senators interviewed by the Philippine Daily Inquirer were unaware of the March 10, 2008, letter of PNP special action force police senior inspector Hendrix B. Mangaldan to Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Jose Balajadia requesting permission for the inspection, claiming they were not informed.
Senate President Manny Villar said he would order Balajadia to bar the police from conducting an inspection of the senators’ offices. “Not that we don’t trust the PNP, we will feel safer if we do it on our own,” he said.
“We are skeptical over the request. We prefer that our own sergeant-at-arms or independent, private security experts conduct the inspection itself. We want to have full faith in the PNP but they have failed to show they are apolitical,” said Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.
