Slight OT: Chemical and biological weapons are NOT conspiracy theories; they're real, and they've all been used in warfare. The Mongols were rumored to have inadvertently used bio-warfare during their conquests, when they flinged dead corpses of Black Death victims to cities they were about to conquer, not because they understood the role of the corpses in spreading disease, but because they simply wanted to terrorize the populace before their wonderful genocide takes place.
Chemical weapons have been used for a long time, but gained official status in WWI: both sides used chlorine gas, phosgene, and sarin. It was terrifying, yes, but ultimately ineffective, as the invention of the gas mask rendered these weapons useless. More people got killed from bombs and bullets than the chemical weaponry.
Do you know what the issue is here: how completely overblown the whole situation is with chemical and biological weapons. They are one of the most completely unreliable types of weapons. Biological and chemical weapons, while potent, are at the mercy of so many factors; transporting, developing and dispersing these are very difficult. Weather, esp. wind direction can completely render these weapons useless. I see them more as "weapons of mass disruption/distraction" rather than a credible threat. What happens in a chemical weapon attack? Some people may die, but the whole area is immediately quarantined, cleaned up, and rendered unusable for some time. Bio weapons? Quarantine, and sophisticated medical practices and understanding have pretty much rendered them useless too.
Someone was saying about SARS being a deadly bio-weapon developed by the Chinese. First of all, you don't weaponize something is infectious as SARS. That's just bad juju; you want the weapon to be easily dispersed, but not communicable. No country or weapons development company would be that insane, regardless of what you see in movies, conspiracy theory blogs, and novels. SARS viruses are also killed rather easily by heat, antibiotics, and radiation. Anthrax however is different; the spores are very hardy and can survive for days, but is not communicable. Bacterial toxins from
clostridium botulinum are also candidates, and so is ricin (from the castor bean). But these are all easily affected by weather conditions, and not to mention ineffective against modern medicine, and quarantine.
How many chemical and biological weapons attacks have you seen so far since WWII? Very few.. and how many casualties were due to these weapons? Even far less... If these weapons were that effective, we'd see several successful attacks by now.
Terrorists and most "rogue states" would rather resort to good old bullets, IED's and VBIEDs: killing far more people than all of the chemical and biological agents used in all of the world's conflicts combined.
Here's more information on how these weapons are so overrated.
