    They are using proxy servers.
I think squid can do this (transparent proxy + redirection). I have not tried it though. Just google the intructions.

This isn't a proxy and the feature is pretty standard on most advanced routers. The easiest way to set this up for most common routers is install dd-wrt (http://www.dd-wrt.com/) on your router and set up Chillispot (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Chillispot). You need to have a router that supports the right feature set though, so you have to check and make sure your router is supported by the firmware that has Chillispot.

EDIT: Just checked and it looks like most versions of the firmware do support HTTP Redirect, you just won't have hotspot management if you don't choose the firmware version with ChilliSpot support.

Wala ni sa akong ddwrt micro build.
I have only a WRT54G and micro build is the only version it supports.

My earlier comment though was from what I read from this site:
    http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pete/upside-down-ternet.html

Upside down internet, tricking your neighbor that is stealing your bandwidth .

It is there on the link I posted above. What is funny that it even inverts all pictures by using gd to trick your neighbors.

It is there but not complete, quoted from the site:

    Code:
For more fun, we set iptables to forward everything to a transparent squid proxy running on port 80 on the machine.

    /sbin/iptables -A PREROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.0.1

That machine runs squid with a trivial redirector that downloads images, uses mogrify to turn them upside down and serves them out of it's local webserver.
This redirects all http traffic to squid proxy located at 192.168.0.1

For setting up squid to run a redirector script, find it here: http://www.3gwt.net/zvi/squid-redirector.html
