You can get free open source versions of Quake 2 ... even Quake 3. This is interesting just because. Nothing more.
For me this is interesting because it was written in Java, which is normally avoided by most game developers due to speed/performance issues. I have to try it out first though :P
Wouldn't it be nice if most commercial games were developed under Java? Yeah I know, wishful thinking..

maybe it would become a reality, using java 3d which uses opengl and directx.
