El Chapo, who has been accused by law enforcement of running the “largest drug trafficking organization in the world,” effectively evaded authorities for decades, twice escaping from maximum-security Mexican prisons. His last attempt in 2015 was widely reported, after it was discovered that he escaped through a mile-long tunnel dug under his cell.
He was recaptured and extradited to the U.S. just one day before the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump.
El Chapo faces a 17-count indictment related to drug trafficking and money laundering of more than $14 billion in cash from narcotics sales in the U.S. and Canada.
