when did they start losing? what year? AMD bought ATI in 2006. C2D was an innovation but AMD could easily counter that if they got the "money" for R&D instead they launched the first gen Phenoms and the fall started from there.
the AMD fusion now called AMD APU will not be materialized without the ATI prowess on the iGPU processing..
OLD MACs ,< not the intel powered > had been powered by the ATI even beofre nvidia with its TnT | Riva was for the windows based cpu.
as innovative as their APU is it ain't enough to generate money which AMD doesn't have
the ATI had been a great visual company before they were acquired by AMD..
after acquisition comes the problem chips.due to switch of management and vision?
exactly my point, problems started to arise in both their cpu and newly acquired gpu department after the acquisition
the HOT HEAT : AMD ATI Radeon 1xxx and the 2xxx were beaten by the nivia FX6xxx and FX7xxx.
the x1xxx are competitive, the HD2xxx which is their first gpu after the acquisition failed miserably.
it is not until the Radeon 3xxx and up that AMD-ATI have gain a foothold.
but they are operating on lesser money now cause they have to allocate R&D for cpu and gpu
it you look at the history..these cards Radeon 3xxx and all that comes after were in a very fast cadence compared to the AMD x86 and x64 cpu that were beaten in all segment from mobile to desktop , workstation and server segment of the industry.
Nvidia failed on fermi but they came back pretty quick. Failure is something AMD could not afford cause they lack the resource. So again money. They gambled on APU so nabahin na pud ang r&d sa cpu department nila.
and these Radeon cards stood their ground against intel IGP and Nvidia..
intel igp no question, nvidia? If nvidia gots beat they'd just shrug it off and move on to the next. You know why? Cause they can afford to lose.
nowadays, if you ak for an entry level CPU , they will answer : AMD APU with Radeon Graphics.
indeed APUs are popular in 3rd world countries. Not so in fully developed countries where the masses can afford better parts. As great as APUs are, they are cheap revenue. Main reason why Intel did not attempt to counter it with something similar.
the x86 processor is weaker than that of intel but the iGPU is very powerful.thanks to ATI Radeon.
