RP Counter-Strike team advances into semis of WCG 2005
SINGAPORE--At last, the Philippines has broken the curse of the first round in the World Cyber Games Grand Final.
As predicted by WCG Philippine team leader and project manager Tjader Regis, the young men of Horsemen of the Apocalypse (HoA) overcame the odds and broke through the second round of the Counter-Strike: Source tournament on the first day of the WCG 2005 Grand Final.
HoA, composed of Justin Chan, Marc Vincent Agbisit, Jan Kristoffer Romillo, Paolo Nancho and Kenichi Enda, scored an upset by defeating the highly fancied Finnish team Astralis, 18-12. Some observers had predicted Astralis would snare at least a bronze medal in this year's tournament.
What made the victory even sweeter is that Chan and Nancho only arrived in Singapore hours before their first match started, as they could not be absent from school.
"We just came into the match. We didn't expect anything, so there was no pressure on us. And they had a lot of pressure on them because it was a big deal for them to lose," HoA team captain Chan told Hackenslash in an interview after they barged into the second round by beating Thailand to top Group C of the Counter-Strike tournament.
