Ever wonder why different cell phone brands have different connectors for chargers, data cables, and headsets?
That may soon change. According to a report from CNET News, the Open Mobile Terminal Forum, which includes major manufacturers Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and LG, has agreed on using the micro-USB as common connector for cables. In analyst quoted in the report said proprietary interfaces “helped manufacturers control the market for accessories, which can be quite high margin.” The report said standardization may also remove the need for manufacturers to ship new chargers with its cell phones.
