Default Qs about Gaming off an External Hard Drive

What are the pros and cons of installing games in your external hard drive?
Would you recommend an external hard drive over an internal hard drive?

Dugay kaayu nah mo-load if external ka. Kasagaran external HDD is hinay ug rpm around 5400 rah. Then samutan pah gyud kung USB2.0 ra compatible.

    Mas maayu internal gyud.

maybe you are talking about external hdd from 5 years ago. karon kay most external hdd are usb 3.0 and much faster than 7200rpm internal hdd.

your external HDD throughput would depend on the actual spindle speed and HDD throughput sa HDD... ayaw mo basi anang "theoretical" throughput speed... dako kaayo na compared sa actual throughput sa data...

pwede ra man i-install siguro ang games sa external drive... sa naa, try lang para naa mo'y 1st hand experience then share diri...

    internal - sata
    external - USB 3.0

sata 3 - can handle up to 6Gb/s max
USB 3.0 - can handle up to 5Gb/s max

assuming a 10,000rpm HDD can provide a max 8Gb/s data(assume lang ha kay ang 7200rpm murag naa ra sa 1.5-2.5Gb/s iya ma hatag), which do you think between SATA III and USB 3 is faster?

besides, SATA is OPTIMIZED for data storage read/write. USB is not.

actually, those are just theoritical speed (buffer to host) na mo abot na sila'g 5 GB/s and 6 GB/s... if we'll factor in the speed of the host (controller) to/from the HDD @ sustained speed, the actual speed of the data throughput will not reach the magic speed of "1 GB/s"... actual speed as disclosed by HDD manufacturer... i'll share WD Black & Blue HDDs...

    > WD Caviar Black HDD... 500 GB (150 MB/s); 1 TB (150 MB/s); 2 TB (164 MB/s); 3 TB (168 MB/s); 4 TB (171 MB/s); 5 TB (194 MB/s) and 6 TB (218 MB/s)
    http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/librar...879-771434.pdf

    > WD Caviar Blue HDD... 500 GB (126 and 150 MB/s); 750 GB (150 MB/s); 1 TB (150 MB/s); 2 TB (147 MB/s); 3 TB (147 MB/s); 4 TB (150 MB/s); 5 TB (170 MB/s) and 6 TB (175 MB/s)
    http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/librar...879-771436.pdf

Note: Blue Caviar consist of 5400 and 7200 rpm spindle speeds...

to double check, kun naa mo'y 2 x internal drive, pag transfer mo'g data from one HDD to the other... dba, makita ninyo ang actual speed na dili maka abot ug 1 GB/s... dili gani na maka abot ug sustained throughout speed of 150 MB/s (the actual transfer speed kay mag depende pud sa individual file sizes)... i'm basing this on my personal experience on data transfer from and to on the 7200 rpm HDDs from Seagate, WD (Blue), Samsung, Hitachi (HGST) and Toshiba. wla ko'y experience on WD Black to Black transfer speed kay isa ra akoang HDD na WD Black Caviar... for the 5400 rpm HDDs and the WD Caviar Green kay ubos ni sila'g actual transfer rate... naa ra'g 25 ~ 65 MB/s ang actual throughput speed...

if read lang, mas pas2x pa ni sa 150 MB/s gyud hinoon... wla pa ko maka check sa actual speed on the "read only"... dili man ko sensitive aning read only man gud... ang write speed akoang focus on my desktop, notebook PC to and from the FreeNAS server...

    i don't think it's a good idea (i don't even know if it'll work)...

pag internal nalang kay one thing for sure, di gyud na managan ang games kung wala naka tangag ang external

by the way, unsa imo case bro?

i highly suggest you use a 2.5" HDD instead... WD Scorpio Blue to be specific kay naay 1TB (ang Black murag 750GB ra naa)... Scorpio Blue is no slouch, it's even faster than 7200 rpm 3.5" drives from 10 years ago...

Been doing that before sa akong WoW kay usahay sa cafe man ko mag duwa then waLa siLay copy. Dugay ang initial loading sa mga map. Init pud kaayo ang disk. Prone pud sa tarog which also means killing the drive sLowLy.
