okay, i lied.

THE FIRST THING I THOUGHT WHEN I SAW LUCKY*STAR was "oh great, another low-budget anime. who wants to see that?" I only gave the series a chance because the studio behind it, Kyoto Animation, was the same studio behind FMP: FUMOFFU, FULL METAL PANIC! THE SECOND RAID and of course, THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA.

it was all talk and talk the first four episodes, until the changed the director in the fifth one. it was still pretty much talk, but the pace improved greatly. parody after parody, inside joke after inside joke, i began to understand the appeal of the series.

Lucky star talks about everyday stuff in a way that you've never thought of before. for example, why are boys okay with getting wet in the rain while girls aren't? because girls wear bras, boys don't. and why are the comfort rooms of restaurants placed close to the smoking area more often than not? because if a fire breaks out, they'd need a convenient water source.

it's pretty postmodern in the sense that it doesn't have any real plot. it's just everyday life. and boy, these girls can make it so damn interesting. i give it a 4.5 out of 5

the various refences are just part of the show's entire appeal. i'm totally in love with this Lucky Star.

it's funny, one of the best lines i ever heard came from an anime show. a girl (konata) was talking to her dad (soujirou) about her mom who passed away. konata's dad was kind hearted but he was also an old geezer, a pervert, an anime freak and very skinny and average looking. here's how their conversation went.

Kona: "Why did mom decide on dad? I mean, you're an old, perverted lolicon otaku. Typically people wouldn't pick you."

Soujirou: "Even for a failure like me... There was always something I was always confident about."

Kona: "The one thing you were always confident about? What's that?"

Soujirou: "That I'm the man who loved Kanata the most in the whole, entire world."

i was teary eyed when i watch that segment of that episode

the whole choreography was finally revealed at the last episode. parodies will be springing up on youtube again, similar to hare hare yukai hehehe

yeah, it was lucky star on serious mode. the tear-jerking side of lucky star. pero i wish they had left it at that, but they did a takeaway by trying to make it funny at the end.

am watching this AGAIN.
