IN HER eagerness to marry a foreigner, a 21-year-old woman from Badian, Cebu allegedly became a victim of human trafficking.
Leah (not her real name) filed a criminal complaint before the Office of the Cebu Provincial Prosecutor accusing Stella Torino, Hannibal Maano and his wife Vilma of violating Republic Act 9208, or the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act.
In her complaint-affidavit, Leah said Torino offered to find her a foreigner husband in June 2012.
She said Torino also offered her free board and lodging while she waited for the “man of her dreams.”
She said Torino instructed to get a photo of her wearing a two-piece bikini as this was “needed.”
Torino allegedly created an account in a dating website for Leah, but kept the password to herself.
Then Torino allegedly pretended to be Leah when she chatted with foreigners.
Leah said she was brought to a mall to meet a foreigner whom the respondents booked for her in August 2012.
‘Money transfers’
She said saw the foreigner hand money to Torino. “It appeared that I was being sold to this American,” Leah said.
She said she threatened to go to the police if Torino forced her to go with the foreigner. As a result, Torino allegedly returned the money to the foreigner.
Torino allegedly continued to communicate with foreigners online using Leah’s account
for several months.
Leah said she learned that Torino asked them for money, which they sent to Torino through money transfer since Leah has no valid ID.
Leah said she never received a single centavo.
This prompted her to leave Torino’s house and report the matter to the police.
