A picture taken with a mobile phone shows an armed man watching as a vehicle, reportedly belonging to Iraqi security forces, is seen in flames on June 10, 2014 in Mosul, some 370 kms north from the Iraqi capital Baghdad. Some 500,000 Iraqis have fled their homes in Iraq's second city Mosul after Jihadist militants took control, fearing increased violence, the International Organization for Migration said. Who Is ISIS?

ISIS is a group of radical hardline militants that has grown out of the al-Qaeda structure. In vastly simplified terms, al-Qaeda is an amalgam of different jihadist groups active in various regions, each with their own command structure but all ostensibly answering to al-Qaeda's core leadership, led by Ayman al-Zawahri.

As the BBC describes in their profile of the group, the formation of ISIS was announced in April of 2013, when the group was presented as a merger between the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), an al-Qaeda affiliate, and the Syrian jihadist rebel group, Jabhat al-Nusra. Soon after the announcement however, the Nusra front rejected the merger, and al-Qaeda's core leadership as well denied the alliance.

The new organization went ahead anyway as ISIS, led by a man named Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and carried out a number of vicious attacks in Syria and Iraq. In June of last year the group was ordered by al-Qaeda's core to leave Syria, but the militants and their leader publicly rejected the order. As the New York Times explains, the move was a "watershed moment in the vast decentralization of al-Qaeda and its ideology since 9/11."

uh dude, Obama made it clear that he isn't putting boots on the ground. I don't see why anybody couldn't see this coming when we went into Iraq 11 years ago. This was fated to happen, it was dumb to oust Saddam. He was much easier to play with than those radicals.

Engel: Sharia Law Being Imposed, Militants Advancing Towards Baghdad

    BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff
    June 13, 2014 9:00 am

NBC’s Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Friday morning and said the violence in Iraq is becoming increasingly worse.

“The Mayor of Mosul just told us moments ago [that] those from ISIS have begun to impose Sharia law, “ he reported.

ISIS militants are advancing towards Baghdad, where they hope to take over. They are just about 40 miles from the outskirts of it. It has not yet been determined whether they will enter the city or if they will wait and gather more weapons before entering.

Engel also said that officials in Mosul report that ISIS militants stole over $400 million in cash from the Central Bank, “which would make them the richest terrorist group in the world.”

He warned, “When you have money and dedication and weapons, that means a lot of power. The people in Baghdad are very concerned, the Shiite government is very concerned..”
