Due to wear and tear. Abrasive micro-particles from your fingertips will eventually leave scratches on your screen.

Gorilla Glass is not entirely scratch proof. Simple silica sand can make hairline scratches on Gorilla Glass. It's the oleophobic coating that truly protects the glass panel from scratches.

Typical Gorilla Glass is around 7H-8H (knives and keys can scratch bare GG) and adding the Oleophobic Coating increases it to 9H.

Glass = provides integrity and shock resistance (bumps, falls, dings, or blunt impact forces)
Oleophobic Coating = provides scratch resistance and minimizes smudging on the display.

To answer TS' question, the oleophobic coating deteriorates over time, screen protectors tend to preserve them and increase their lifespan.
