Venom: ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off Movie’s Details Revealed
Comic book fans and superhero movie lovers rejoice! The creators of the upcoming ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ elaborated on their spin-off plans on March 12, and revealed how they’d be showcasing fan-favorite villains such as Venom and Sinister Six.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still months away from premiering, but the creators of the superhero flick have already got us looking ahead. In an unprecedented move, the Spiderman spin-offs will center around the villains of the comic book world, and the details that director Mark Webb and producer Matt Tolmach have revealed regarding fan-favorites like Venom and Sinister Six will blow your mind.
“We’ve been talking about how to make this universe even bigger, and really get underneath the skin of all the incredible characters,” Mark told SFX. “The cinematic possibilities of all these storylines are just magnificent.”
And idea occurred to the filmmakers to expand the Spiderman saga far beyond the web-slinger himself. “We decided that there are all these other stories to tell: not just Spider-Man movies,” Matt said.
It might sound weird to make a superhero movie focused completely on the guys who oppose superheroes, but the guys behind Spider-Man seem to have a plan. And they’ve also tapped into the thinking that just because villains like Venom and the Sinister Six are bad guys doesn’t mean that they aren’t interesting.
“It’s a challenge in every sense,” Matt admitted before hopefully adding:
At the same time it’s an awesome challenge, because some of the greatest characters are in fact villains, and how you construct that is so much fun. People love those bad characters if they’re good bad characters, and love to watch them. And nobody’s all good, nobody’s all bad, and so where we end up with that story, I think, is a really awesome challenge, and we all smile when we think about what you can do.
Another producer, Avi Arad, specifically focused on how Venom could be an enthralling movie protagonist. “Venom hated only one guy – Spider-Man. He wasn’t innately bad, he was a shortcut guy, not really into fighting hard for achievement,” Avi pointed out. “Can he also be a good guy? As you know, Venom was also called ‘lethal defender of the innocent’. We had a great history with him, especially caring for the homeless, which is a very sensitive issue and something that many of us are very concerned with.”
So don’t go dismissing the bad guys before you get to know them! From what we can tell, the spin-offs revolving around villains like Venom are going to be even more intriguing than the straightforward superhero flicks.
The Venom spin-off film will be penned by Ed Solomon.
