ORMOC CITY -- A road accident Thursday night killed three and injured six persons at Lilia Avenue, Cogon, this city.
The accident involved a ten-wheeler truck with plate number RFM 295 that collided with a container truck (HVP 953) and side swept seven other vehicles at the city’s main road upon entering the city proper.
Police Officer 3 (PO3) Roger Baronda of Ormoc City’s police station 1 said that the 10-wheeler truck loaded with 400 sacks of rice for the World Food Program (WFP) intended for Tacloban City was entering the city when it lost brake and bumped a crossing container van of CD Trucking, side swiping a passenger tricycle and three single motorcycles before it bashed Du Ek Sam Marketing and hit its three parked service vehicles.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the first responder, rescued some of the victims and brought them to the hospital. The Energy Drilling Corporation Rescue unit also assisted the Ormoc rescue and recovered the body of the security guard of nearby Norkis Corporation who went off duty and was waiting for a ride at the side of the road when hit by the ten-wheeler truck.
Baronda said a bystander confirmed that while the truck was approaching the road corner from Dolores village where it took the supplies, it kept on beeping and the truck helper was seen signaling that they lost brake.
The three fatalities were the guard identified only as “R. Mayo” who died on the spot, the truck driver Domingo San Miguel from Nueva Ecija who was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, and 14-year-old Rico Hingco who passed away a few hours later. He is the nephew and helper of CD container van driver Jessel Hingco.
The truck helper is said to be missing.
The victims were confined at the city’s different hospitals, with two of them critical, added Baronda.
