Beijing, China – Xia Junfeng’s last wish was very simple – he wanted one last picture before dying, for his son’s memory. But Chinese officials rejected his final request.
Junfeng’s wife, Zhang Jing, posted a series of eerie messages on Weibo, a popular messaging platform in China, that went viral immediately after her husband was executed Wednesday, September 25.Some of her messages that touched the heart of Chinese netizens read as follows;“Early this morning, the court sent people to take me to meet Xia Junfeng for the last time. I’m going crazy. Getting ready to go…”
After the execution was carried out, she posted another message lamenting her disappointment and anguish;“Xia Junfeng begged them to take a picture for our family, but they said no. Why are you so cruel, why?”
“When we were together, the whole family was crying in heap, yet Xia Junfeng did not shed tear.”
Xia Junfeng was a convicted double-murderer. But his story goes beyond the crime he committed and was convicted of, that it attracted a lot of attention from the local media afterwards.
Junfeng used to work in a factory, but lost his job in 2009. In order for his family to survive, he resorted to selling sausages from a stall in Shenyang, north-east province in Liaoning. However, he got in trouble withchengguans, local management officers, who forced him to move his stalls away from the street.
The confrontation became violent, with Xia stabbing two chengguans with a knife during the scuffle.Authorities who investigated the incident reported that the attack was unprovoked, while Xia maintained it was self-defense and there were several witnesses to prove his claim, including his wife.
Zhang Jing said that she witnessed the fight herself. She added that there were six more eyewitnesses who expressed willingness to testify, but were not allowed by the court.
In China, Chengguans wield powers in local communities. They’re a little less like policemen but is feared for their notoriety. Last July, a similar incident occurred when a watermelon vendor was killed by six chengguans in Hunan province.
Xia Junfeng was sentenced to death almost immediately and his appeal in 2011 was subsequently denied.
China is known for its very strict, harsh implementation of its laws. It has carried out executions of convicted criminals more than any other country in the world.
