MANILA -- The Filipina convicted for smuggling six kilos of illegal drugs in China may face death either on Tuesday or Wednesday, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
DFA spokesperson Raul Hernandez said Monday the execution could take place on Wednesday at the latest even as the Chinese government has yet to notify them regarding the final time and date.
He said the family of the 35-year-old Filipina talked to her for 30 minutes for what could be their last meeting. The Filipina's mother also asked to see her nephew, who was also sentenced to death but received a two-year reprieve because of good behavior.
"China is known for implementing strict laws against drug trafficking. We respect their laws and their court's decision," said Hernandez.
An attempt to save the Filipina from execution has taken a sad turn on Sunday after the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent word that "now would not be a convenient time" for Vice President Jejomar Binay to personally appeal the sentence to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Vice President was supposed to give Xi a letter of appeal from President Benigno Aquino III seeking a deferment of the execution and downgrade of the sentence to life imprisonment.
The same letter was sent last Thursday to the Chinese Embassy in Manila but it has yet to respond to Aquino's wishes. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
