SPECS FOR NEW PC

HI EVERYBODY:

I'm planning to have a new PC assembled. Use is mostly for research, processing, and the like, and ordinary internet web browsing. Maybe some gaming for the kids. I plan the P4 processor, but I already have doubts because of the feedback of overheating. Of course the other option is the AMD, but I'm not really familiar about this. Kindly advise me what will be best for my purpose, and if ever you can, pls include ideal specs. Thank you all!
