What is copper shim?
It is a small copper metal (15mm x 15mm x 1mm size or 15mm x 15mm x 0.5mm size) which is placed between your processor and your laptop heat-sink to provide maximum contact and heat transfer. This is also applicable to desktop video cards and other devices with a 15mm x 15mm video chip size.
What is thermal conductive pad?
Thermal pad are a pre-formed square or rectangle of solid material commonly found on the underside of heat-sinks to aid the conduction of heat away from the component being cooled (such as a CPU or another chip) and into the heat-sink (usually made from aluminum or copper). Do i really need to have copper shims installed in my laptop?
Laptop manufacturers use thermal gum to provide heat transfer from your processor/video chip to the heat sink. After using your laptop for a year or more, we found out that most thermal gum is now dry or shrunk in size therefore there is no more contact between your processor/video chip and the heat sink and thus causes your laptop to overheat.
What happens if my laptop experience frequent overheating?
Prolonged overheating causes motherboard damage with the following symptoms:
1. Random restarts/shut-downs
2. Garbled display
3. No display or random no display
4. Worse: no power
If you love your laptop, have it cleaned regularly or purchase a good quality thermal paste and if needed some copper shim to extend the life and performance of your laptop.
