MANILA - The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Youth on Wednesday reminded the youth of the importance of going to Mass every week amid a decline in weekly Church attendance among Catholics.
Fr. Kunegundo Garganta, CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Youth executive secretary, said it is important for young people to interact with fellow youths in their local parishes.
Garganta said watching too much television, listening to FM stations or being addicted to the Internet and social media could cause one to lose interest in hearing Mass.
The Social Weather Stations (SWS) disclosed recently that weekly church attendance among Catholic adults in the Philippines has declined from 64% in July 1991 to only 37% in February 2013. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/focus/04/08/13/ph-catholics-going-mass-weekly...
The SWS survey also showed that about one in every 11 Filipino Catholics said they agreed with the statement: “Sometimes I think I might leave the Catholic Church.”
In an interview, Fr. Robert Reyes said he agrees with the result of the survey, noting that he personally observed this in the parish he used to serve.
Reyes said the decrease in the number of weekly churchgoers may be attributed to "boring homilies" and "second collections."
He said some homilies end up boring because most priests lack the time to prepare for their sermons. He noted that every Sunday, one priest does not celebrate Mass just once but several times.
Moreover, Catholic priests in the Philippines also celebrate Masses everyday.
