NEW MILKY WAY VISUALISATION FROM GOOGLE
This new visualisation tool from Google, called 100,000 stars, allows you to take a tour of our cosmic neighbourhood: 100,000 Stars. It needs to run on Google Chrome. You can use your mouse to zoom in, out and around the stars. Zooming in allows you to learn the names of some of our closest stars and you can click on the names of the stars to learn more about them. There is an option to ‘Take a Tour’ in the upper left hand corner; next to that is an option to toggle the spectral index.
When you zoom in, you see the closest stars to us, with the Sun in the middle. When you zoom in even further you’ll see the Oort Cloud; zooming in even further brings you to the planetary orbits. Moving your mouse up and down gives a 3D effect, though it can be quite dizzying. If you get a little lost, next to the icon to toggle the spectral index is an option to centre on the Sun.
The visualisation comes from the Chrome Experiment team and uses imagery and data from NASA and ESA; the majority of the visuals are artist’s renditions. The music is provided by Sam Hulick, who is a composer for Mass Effect.
