Default Directory Services For Linux. Like Windows Active Directory?

hello. how can i have a user authentication for our windows computers. So i want to have a service like windows active directory where you can have centralized user authentication and file access. I already know how to do this in windows server. but i want to implement it using linux(for financial purposes). is it possible to have a linux directory service to authenticate users that would use windows operating systems. if so what would i need. Ive read something like openldap and samba. but its kind of confusing. thanks
