WD Caviar Black (1TB) vs RED (2TB)

I just got my 2TB Red drive a couple of months back and I decided to do a benchmark before I set it up on my NAS box as I was curious to see which would emerge faster.

This is not a comprehensive benchmark since I only used ATTO for disk benchmarks and FastCopy for real-world copying scenarios. I used FastCopy because it provides us with the time elapsed for the copy operation. I copied the installation folder of Diablo 3 (11GB) for this benchmark. Both drives were attached to the same SATA 3 port to be consistent (swapped after each test).

I also did the same tests on the WD 1TB Black drive after it was cleaned out. A second run was done after wiping the drive clean with a low level wipe.

The test doesn't conclude much as we're comparing a 1TB Black drive against a 2TB Red drive but that's all I had at that time but it's interesting to note that the RED drive was much faster than the Black drive during the actual file copy scenarios.

true, you could also see that the Black drive's performance and R/W speed increased after it was low level wiped. Something to think about when reformatting your drives. Same thing happens to SSD's too

kung unsa ako mga nabasahan ug natan-aw nga review ani
mao ni ang drive nga mo run ug 24/7 dba? (correct me if i'm wrong)

WD Red's were designed for stand alone NAS boxes and for SOHO RAID use... maong naa sila'y dala sa NAS ware... ang WD RE4 ang intended for Enterprise market... on RAID use pud... kani duha, designed for RAID gyud ni sila the runs on 24/7... then ang RE4, rigid kay ang intended application nya is for rack mount servers..

pero, diri sa akoang place, mas mahal ang RED compared sa RE4... sometimes, mag differ sila ug 2K php... nice kaayo ang WD Red... manampiling lang sa ko nag tan-aw ani... hehehe... wla pa gyud ma realise ang RAID project nko kay divert ang funds to pamugas... hehehe

^ 3 yrs... mao ni ang manufacturer's warranty na gihatag sa WD on their HDDs...


Blue & Green HDDs: 2 yrs
Red & A/V HDDs: 3 yrs
Black, VelociRaptors, XE & RE HDDs: 5 yrs

haayyyyyyy, gone are the days nga 3 years ang standard warranty sa mga HDD's... may gani ni balik og 2 years, hehehe! dba murag 1 year ra to after gyud sa baha sah?
