Lawmakers want cheaper broadband after poll says 79% of Pinoys don't have net access at home

MANILA, Philippines - Two lawmakers are urging telecommunication companies to lower broadband rates to increase Internet usage among Pinoys inside their homes. Iloilo 1st District Rep. Janette Garin and Isabela 4th District Rep. Giorgidi Aggabao made the call after a recent Gallup poll showed that 79% of Pinoys don't have net access at home. "Having internet access will be of big help to Filipinos especially those students who sometimes have to stay late at computer shops to research on their assignments online," Garin said in a statement.She said lowering broadband service rates by at least 50 percent would be rational and allow more Filipinos to subscribe because of cheaper costs. The basic rate of telecommunication companies varies with some charging P999 for a monthly subscription of 1.5 Mbps Internet speed usage. Aggabao, vice chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, said many Filipinos are deterred by the high cost of broadband subscription and would rather spend their money on essential things.
He said home Internet connections would allow more Filipinos easy access to vital information like news and livelihood opportunities."They can get all these important and helpful information anytime they want to at home. We call on telecommunication companies to be more considerate by cutting their Internet service costs to help Filipinos still without home Internet access," he said. In the latest report from Gallup, a United States-based pollster, four out of five Filipinos don’t have access to Internet in their homes. Of the 1,200 Filipinos surveyed, Gallup said 79% answered “no” to the question: “Does your home have access to the Internet?” The Philippines belonged to a group of countries where the majority find themselves lacking in home connections. The others in the group are: Syria, Iraq, Laos, Cambodia, etc. Most Filipinos still go to internet cafes for access to the web.
Gallup said Internet access is important for people's well-being.“A nation's home Internet access coverage -- or lack thereof -- has implications for that population's economic strength and well-being as well as the global economy. The more people who have Internet access in their homes, the more likely they are to have easy, around-the-clock access to consume news and information, and in some cases, to sell and buy goods online.”
