shame for Peter Lamont... he's indeed very selfish.. although i have to admit that it's a good CMS. hopefully it will be back to normal but i doubt it.

hello sis! nice to see ANOTHER fellow mamber.. or thats what we call the community members from the:

"TCMSFKAM" - The CMS Formerly Known As M*mbo

yeah, its was an international battery.. MIro didnt won any battle any way.. all dev core developers, doc teams, TPD's, and of course community members already moved out to the OSM - opensourcematters.

nice to know as well, even the presigious slashdot feature TCMSFKAM.. well after all,.. in award giving bodies(not only once).. TCMSFKAM even beat Mozilla Firefox for the best FREE software.

whew! a shame to PL indeed!

btw.. drop by the filipino forums over:

Mambo CMS developers exodus and form OpenSourceMatters

8/18/2005 4:18:51 PM, by Matt Woodward

A few months ago, Ars Technica covered LinuxWorld Expo 2005 here in Boston. As Jorge and I reported, aside from the CEO of Novell announcing the GPL of their Netmail code as the Hula Project, not much happened. Well, not much, except for that a little known open-source, web-based Content Management System (CMS) known as Mambo won awards for "Best Open Source Solution" as well as the "Best of Show." Quite an honor! A few weeks ago, Mambo continued their winning streak by beating out Mozilla Firefox to again take home the "Best Open Source Solution" award at the Linux World Expo 2005 in San Francisco. For those of you who do not know much about Mambo, it is a Content Management System with a strange, yet dramatic history. The story goes something like this:

Mambo originated from an Australian company known as Miro who decided to open source their code by putting it up on SourceForge and licensing it under the GPL. The open source community got a nice CMS and Miro had the open source community patching and improving its CMS. Everything went swimmingly for a while until Miro decided that it was taking back "their" code. Access to the code was shut off and the community vociferously objected. Fortunately because the code was GPL'd, the open source community was eventually able to pressure Miro to fork the code. And thus Mambo was born.

Since then, many open source developers have contributed to Mambo. In kind, Mambo and the community have rapidly grown and matured as evidenced by its recent awards won at LinuxWorld Expo. Along the way, Miro realized the error of their ways and attempted to make amends with the Mambo community. Miro promised resources that the open source Mambo community did not have and everything seemed great once again.

During the 2005 San Francisco LinuxWorld Expo, the CEO of Miro announced that he was forming a new non-profit organization called the Mambo Foundation. On the surface, such a maneuver seemed like noble idea for maintaining and ensuring the longevity of Mambo. The only problem with this announcement was that not a single core developer of Mambo was informed of these changes in advance. This thinly-veiled power play to gain more control over Mambo was not going to be tolerated by the developers. Consequently, all 19 members of the Mambo Development Team have formed a new website called OpenSourceMatters and posted a letter to the community regarding their "serious concerns about the Mambo Foundation and its relationship to the community." The letter to the community cites the following:

The Mambo Foundation was formed without regard to the concerns of the core development teams. We, the community, have no voice in its government or the future direction of Mambo. The Mambo Steering Committee made up of development team and Miro representatives authorized incorporation of the Foundation and should form the first Board. Miro CEO Peter Lamont has taken it upon himself to incorporate the Foundation and appoint the Board without consulting the two development team representatives, Andrew Eddie and Brian Teeman.

Although Mr. Lamont through the MSC promised to transfer the Mambo copyright to the Foundation, Miro now refuses to do so.

With only joint control of the name "Mambo", it appears that the Mambo name will be abandoned for something that can be fully trademarked. Fortunately for the developers of the CMS formerly known as Mambo, the code is still licensed under the GPL. (Unfortunately, this does preclude them from ever relicensing the code.) The other good news is that Eben Moglen and the Software Freedom Law Center team are advising the ex-Mambo Development Team with their near-term plans.

In the meantime, OpenSourceMatters has put up their own forum for continued discussion of code development and the events that have transpired. In the coming weeks, it is expected that the core developers will form their own non-profit foundation to keep the best interests of their open source code where they belong — in the open source community. We should also note that all major Mambo sites like Mamboserver.com, Mamboforge.net, and Mambo-foundation.org are all owned by Miro and are no longer under the control of the recently departed Mambo developers. If you wish to donate to the new cause, it is recommended that you hold on to your cash until a new foundation is setup and able to legally take donations. For further information about this change, check out the FAQ on OpenSourceMatters.com
