Selling is positioning. Just as in many other competitive arenas, the person who occupies the most favoured, powerful or influential position with the decision-maker will be successful in achieving his or her objectives.
It follows, then, that the sales professional who establishes and maintains position will increase the odds of being the first choice in the customer’s decision-making process.
Positional Selling is a way of thinking about yourself as a sales professional. It is essentially a philosophical concept, a state of mind that leads to effective sales behaviour. When you successfully establish and stay in position with your customers, you are creating sales environments by which all other competitive efforts are judged. When you do all of the right things before, during, and after the sales call, you are in position. You are thinking position all of the time. You act in ways that keep you in favoured position. Your products and services gain preeminent attention because you have positioned them accurately in the consciousness of your customer.
