256MB mem card DDR533 + 256MB X1900GT video card + 10k rpm Sata <---- i wouldn't even think about installing a 256MB RAM on a basic computer

    1GB mem card DDR533 + 768MB 8800GTX video card + 7200rpm Sata <---- i would go with this one over the other 2, (but if i had a 8800 GTX i wouldn't be using a 7200RPM HDD,... (if ur in a budget) i would go with a Raptor 74GB / master HDD for $150)

2GB mem card DDR400 + 512MB FX5200 video card + 5400rpm IDE <---- looks OK,.... but the 5400RPM HDD would be dragging your system

    you may consider this configuration:

2gb of DDR 667 (dual channel if possible) + geforce 7950gt(I prefer nvidia for performance) or radeon x1950 pro 500mb (I prefer ATI for good texture quality) + 2x160gb SATA generation 2 hardrive @ raid 0.

I prefer 2gb of memory, coz it will have a faster loading time.
7950gt or x1950 pro 512mb is enough to run @ 1280x1024 @max setting most of the new games.
I prefer having a raid drive than purchasing an expensive raptor drive that will only give you 74gb of memory space. Believe me, raid 0 is a good array for games and much cheaper than raptor and it will give you much space for your games.

if you really want to have the 8800gtx. you have to consider a very good power supply with enough power to feed this monster. Otherwise, byebye system.

your configuration above where you want to choose from is not balance, better check and thoroughly configure. Try to search the web, you will never see a gaming rig with a 256mb of memory. what is your 256 mb for, i'm confuse with this configuration. Coz no matter how fast is your hardrive, it is still better to have a larger physical memory. What is that option 3 is for, LOL.

Option two is better but you may consider an additional hardrive so you can have a raid0. But you should consider your power supply, it should be a good one.

    as cool as ice...

Option 2 is better, but try to replace hdd with wd 74gb raptor and you'll see much difference.

Raptor is very fast, i've been using my raptor for 2 years now...and i'm very much impressed about the performance.

My raptor Cons - expensive, noisier and hot.

Maybe i should try RAID 0 set-up of 7200 SATA to see the difference...
