We knew from way back in December 2011, that Sapphire is working on custom-design Radeon HD 7970 graphics card models with some crazy factory-overclocked speeds. The company today reiterated that it's working on some of those models, but that the SKU is changed from HD 7970 to HD 7970 GHz Edition. A little more than a name change is behind the announcement.
Earlier today, AMD announced the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, a new SKU that is touted to be faster than NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680, enabling AMD to retake the single-GPU performance crown. We also learned that most of these HD 7970 GHz Edition cards will be sold by its various add-in board (AIB) partners. The biggest such AIB partner, Sapphire, soon followed up on AMD's announcement with one of its own, stating that the HD 7970 Toxic 6GB and Vapor-X (Atomic) series graphics card models it's working on, have been modified, and that they will carry the HD 7970 GHz Edition GPU.
What's in a name change? Well, apart from ≥1 GHz GPU and ≥1.5 GHz memory clock speeds, the SKU introduces PowerTune with Boost, a feature touted to be comparable to NVIDIA GPU Boost, although it functions in a markedly different way, as we found out, in our review. The shift to the new SKU could also give Sapphire's new models the advantage of being based on something recently announced and proven to be generally faster than the GTX 680. In its press release, Sapphire also stated that the new Toxic and Vapor-X (Atomic) models will be announced "within the next few weeks."
