Was in Arusha, Tanzania in 2003 for a meeting. Stayed at the Mt. Meru hotel (OK place, decent food, very accessible to transportation and safari pickups). A lot of people generally consider this place as one of the gateways for safari-type trips in the Tanzania area. It is a very picturesque city located near one of Tanzania's national parks (Arusha National Park) and the spectacular Mt. Meru. It is about 3-5 hours by bus from Nairobi (Kenya) and the nearest airport is the Kilimanjaro airport. Went on a mini-tour of the park---where a sampling of the wildlife can be seen. The highlight of the tour would have to be the sight of all those flamingoes in one of the lakes in the park.
A few photos:
A view from the hotel. Mt. Meru should be off to the left.

"Typical" scenery on the bus ride from Nairobi to Arusha. Wasn't brave enough to take photos of the Masai!

A picture of some of the locals at the park. Mt. Meru should be in the background.
