Has anyone tried hosting a web application (e.g. accounting system) that can handle 300-500 simultaneous users using public or dedicated server?

I tried using the basic package of arvixe but the performance is rather slow. It will start to slow down when there are 5 simultaneous users. Was wondering if upgrading to the business package is going to be enough, or even the dedicated server can handle hundreds of simultaneous users.

It is better if you rent/buy VPS or Dedicated server for that application. Don't rely on Shared Hosting for that type of application. Shared hosting is good for websites.

Yes, after reading some forums, Shared Hosting is not fit for this type of application. VPS or Dedicated Server can definitely handle a bigger load, but when it reaches its load limit, what will be the next step? I wonder how other applications like Facebook handle tons of users. I read about 4GH being offered by GoDaddy that can dynamically handle sudden big loads.. but some of the review comments says the oppposite.

I think VPS can handle hundreds of users simultaneously. just select the VPS plan that has higher bandwidth and 100Mbps or even 1GB network node.

have you tried using VPS? what is the network node for?

Yes, I have a VPS and it has 100Mbps node. I hosts my own websites and my clients websites as well in this server. There are only few websites in this server.

I think this is the reason why your application slows down, Check if you are using this name server of ARVIXE:

Are you using Supreme Web Host for your VPS?
By the way, how do you know how many domains are registered in a given name server?

Arvixe offers VPS but I don't know if this is better than Supreme Web Host.
The reason I chose Arvixe is because other hosting sites do not allow stored procedures in shared hosting.
If I will jump to VPS, I will need to reassess all hosting sites again.

Additional info.. I'm using Ruby on Rails and ASP.Net.

I tried to look around for web hosting sites supporting RoR but the versions are old.
Currently I'm trying Site5.com since it seems to have the best RoR hosting features.

For my ASP.Net applications, I'm using Arvixe.
If there are better hosting sites that support ASP.Net, please do inform me

When choosing VPS, I think the only important thing is the hardware that will be allocated to your VPS. It is because you will be the one to set it up, install software, Linux or Windows, install RoR, FFMPEG and other things that you need.

But most of the VPS are easily upgradable, you can increase RAM, disk space, processing power, bandwidth, etc. at additional costs.
Choosing a VPS will also depend on your budget. Unmanaged VPS are cheaper - since you will be the one to do all the set up.
Also, your VPS provider should be using or backed-up by well-known, reliable Dedicated Server provider companies like LiquidWeb.
