Default this proves that it's perfectly safe to use your phone during flight...

... unless you happen to be the pilot

Flight Aborted 392 Feet Before Landing Because Pilot Was Texting

It's pretty widely accepted that you shouldn't text and operate a vehicle. Especially when that vehicle is a commercial aircraft. Apparently one pilot, though, hasn't taken that advice to heart. And he almost killed a few hundred people because of it.

Upon arrival in Singapore, Jetstar flight JQ57 had to abort its landing at a frightening 392 feet from the ground when the pilot plum forgot to put down the landing gear because he was distracted by his phone. A pilot! Operating a 220-passenger aircraft!

It really sounds like a case of two idiots that shouldn't be operating vessels full of living, breathing humans. Who were almost not so living and breathing. The captain's device started buzzing with message alerts when the plane hit an altitude of around 2,000-2,500 feet. The co-pilot looked over and noticed the captain was "preoccupied." His superior claimed he was trying to unlock the phone to turn it off. Which would have been fine, had he, with his 13,000 hours of flying experience, remembered standard operating procedures like activating the landing gear.

At 1,000 feet, the first officer checked the instruments and felt like something was off, though he couldn't tell what it was, despite his 4,000 hours of flying experience. At 720 feet, a warning sounded in the cockpit to tell the pilots the wheels weren't lowered. By 650 feet, the captain tried to activate the gear, but by that time, an alarm sounded to indicate that the plane had dipped below 500 feet, too close to the tarmac for the undercarriage to get safely into place.

The co-pilot told investigators that by this point he was ready to take the plane back into the air to avoid a crash. At a dangerously small window of 392 feet, that's what they did. And so it came to pass that no one ever flew Jetstar again, the end.

agree, It had been proven time and again that phones's radiowaves can and will cause harms on the mechanical gyros especially on the cockpit. The plane uses gyros and radar to pinpoint its exact location on the air. The pilot uses radiowaves to communicate to the nearby landing tower when the plane is about to take off and land.

When you leave your phone's radio ON.. You are actually contributing to the magnetic and radio interference on the cockpit and the more people leaving their phone's radio ON... the greater the risk on the interferences on the radiowaves.. making the phone at risk to a near fatal CRASH!

To those who leave their phone's FLIGHT MODE OFF... Don't bring other people to your grave.. if you have to dig your own grave.. DIG YOUR OWN lang!

    tell that to the marines!

cite an example that mobile phone interference was the cause of an aircraft accident/incident.

read the article clearly and you'll know who's at fault

ever wonder why mobile phones are allowed in corporate flights, what's the difference between the commercial when it's prohibited if you say so?

and oh by the way, mobile phone usage is allowed in a commercial flight, an Emirates Airline flight which I boarded on...

so much for your itchy bitchy tirade

    cheers!

you ask any pilot and they can tell you right away.. Emirates Air have availed of the OnAir System to let their customer use their own mobile phones and laptops in the confines of their own planes. Read that: Emirates Air is their clients FAQs | OnAir other than that... most airbuses and aircrafts does not have protective systems to shield them from radio and electromagnetic interferences. and in case you need to refresh your mind on boarding flights: Mobile phones on aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Why Can't You Use Your Cell Phone on an Airplane? No point in cheering because Cheers are not for someone who doesn't read the ground and flight rules.

You need to wakeup and smell some coffee bud!, just because you had used your mobile phone in Emirates AIR, doesn't necessarily constitutes and generalizes the fact that IT IS OKAY TO USE YOUR MOBILE PHONE at FLIGHT. Emirates have again availed of the OnAIR system (FAQs | OnAir) and again, over and over again, NOT ALL AIRLINES have availed of that system yet.

It's better to straighten the facts than just bury it under the pillow. There is no harm in just abiding hard fact RULES. Something that most pinoys are stupid and hard to follow.. even if just to tell to turn off or put their phone in FLIGHT MODE.
