Question Mechanical Engineer with unfinished units in Electrical Engineering...

I just want to ask your opinion or suggestion regarding my situation, especially for those with work experience and career maturity. I'm already a licensed M.E. working in my field for almost a decade, and my expertise is especially connected in both ME and EE, as well in Electronics. During my time in college, I took up preparatory EE subjects and my main reason was to gain an edge in finding a good job or career. After graduation from BSME and passed the Licensure Exam, I briefly continued my BSEE course. But due to financial reasons and pressures, I stopped and looked for a job.

When I landed my first job, my added knowledge in EE did help me in my work since I can read electrical diagrams and had better understanding in the EE field, but my skills rather my units in EE was the one that gave me an edge in the job market.

Since there is this ETEEAP, it crosses into my mind to finish what I have started, and I'm already in 4th year standing and furthermore, my work experience is really connected with BSEE. But now, sometimes I feel there is really no big impact in my life if I pursue my second course due to this reasons.

    1. Whether you have only one college degree/license or more than one, the main ingredient in receiving promotion is being known or recommended by your superiors, whether due to your skills or "socializing" relationships. So far my career status is okay, and with proper "socializing" with the bosses and above average performance, I can still rise to the corporate ladder even if I don't finish my EE.

    2. Although I can afford to take up ETEEAP, I have to earn that money and there are other financial responsibilities which I have to attend. So I have to be sure if the money that I will spend will really have an impact in my career since I don't just pick up money in the sidewalk.

    3. Most of us think that having a college degree, board license, or Masters degree can gain respect or awe from friends or other people (and some think it is a plus factor in getting girls ). But as what I have experienced, having these qualities or achievements sometimes give you more pressure and expectations from others. And a few people even envies you especially for those with crab mentalities.

    4. Some people really don't have the rat's butt to care whether you have two or more professional license. The most important thing in having a job is your salary.

The rationale of my side is that, a part of me wishes to finish my BSEE but I don't have a strong reason, conviction or drive why should I do it...

What are your reactions or comments? Good and bad replies are very well accepted and needed. Thanks!

(PS: Taking up a masters degree is great, but the problem is that my work schedule does not permit me to enroll for the time being. my focus is now whether to finish or not my BSEE)

Sa imong side brad, in my opinion mas maayo mo take ka ug EE. Gamay ra kaayo mga EE karong panahona, unya demand kaau ni nga profession. Then mga one year plus nalang ang imong kulang.

Daghan kaayo mga ECE pero wala jud sila nag practice as an Electronics Engineer.

The most convincing reason should be - In pursuit of knowledge, above all else. The piece of paper that you receive during graduation is just a testament to the knowledge and experience you gained and went through.

If you see yourself an employee even 15 years from now, then additional units might help you climb the corporate ladder. I would suggest taking some units on IT/CompSci instead of EE.

OT: I have nothing against IT/Compsi, but IMHO, even if daghan opportunities sa IT, daghan na pod kaayo ang well versed ani nga field, and there is greater competition. Sa IT park lang daan, there are thousands of IT/CompSci professionals working, how much more pa kaha sa abroad.

In my point of view and field of experience, dako ang opportunity para sa Electrical Engineers. People downgrade this profession thinking nga mag lineman langka or electrician ra ang end result, mao na gamay ra kaayo ang mga EE, especially licensed, sa karon nga panahon.

Take note that your computers and internet cannot work without electricity, while electric power can be generated by only three things: a ferrous metal conductor, magnetic field, and relative motion. It sounds so simple but it becomes complicated afterwards.

Sa ako situation, naana man gud ko ani nga career level. Even if mag proceed ko ug EE or not doesn't really help much. But sa mga fresh graduates nindot ni siya nga job opportunity.
