Hi!
I just wanted to share with all of you my painful experience with this disease.. When I was in the states my shizhu got accidentally pregnant and gave birth to 3 mixed "bisaya" pups. I quickly named them "boom" , "mads" and shaq. A few weeks ago I noticed boom wasnt his normal self he was'nt chasing after our lab anymore and was sleeping more often than usual. So I checked him out and noticed and smelled an ear infection. So I had medication given the same day and it began to get better the next day. So after a while maybe 2-3 days later I had them vaccinated. After a couple of days I noticed that boom was having a weird chewing going on with his mouth it was more like having a bone stuck on your throat kinda thing and he was trying to get it out. So I quiclky brought him to the vet and was diagnosed distemper... I never heard of this disease before but I know theres a vaccine for it. So the vet told me that he would be on antibiotics to prevent secondary infection and I would have to leave him behind because He would be on I.V.F. Boom passed away a day after. So after reading anout distemper I quickly checked my dogs for the symptoms and to my horrible surprised "Mads" had the symptoms Hard Paws , Dry Nose , Eye and Nose discharges. I quickly took her to the vet and was on antibiotic and on other medications. I was also prescribed with vitamin C to help with her immune system. Every morning I would go the vet to have her medications and antibiotics given but everyday she became weaker and started having muscle twitches a bad sign since this indicated that her nervous system has been attacked. I said to mads That I would never give up if she didnt give up. Every morning after breakfast we would drive to the vet and have her shoots but her symptoms got worse as the days passed she began to have chewing gum fits , and back leg seizures still I didnt give up hoping that it would pass. Then this friday her seizure was slightly gone. She was walking around the garden and sniffing on the plants. It was a great sight to see. A sigh of relief finally we are winning the battle mads! I was very hopeful at this point. Saturday came she was up and walking but coudnt hold her balance well , she would fall and cry in pain and I would pick her up and massage her body. She must have felt a slight relief since she would stop crying and would lay down till she could get up again. So I talked to the vet and he said that if mads can get thru this she would maybe make it thru this disease. I was prescribed with B Complex to help with the nerve damage and gave it to her when I got home. To my surprise mads was so weak and hardly moving she had seizure and chewing gum fits more often.. Fed her dinner and it was a heart breaking to see her eat and having muscle twitches. I placed her to bed massage her and told her that it was okay to go if she wanted to rest. Sunday dawn came mads was barking feriously I was happy and was excited to see her and was hoping she would run out with excitement. But I was shocked to see a limp pup not moving and was wet with her own drool. I quickly picked her up and made her more comfortble i was massaging and rubbing her. She was already limp and having seizures more often at this point. I was with her 6am Kept on massaging her and rubbing her limp body. Around 7:30-7:40 she finally passed. I was glad that her pain was finally over and she could now rest. But guilt set in quickly... If hadnt waited too long for the vaccine shots this wouldnt happen I would have 3 rascals until now.
