Filipino Dumog vs. BJJ Grappling

Dumog, a popular past time event in aklan is a classical form of martial art and is already a part of the island's heritage. BJJ on the other hand is more contemporary and is not necesarily an integral culture of Brazil ( making it non classical) but is very effective and the curriculum is more organized.

This is a close fight, but ill go for Dumog to protect our national heritage.

From my little exposure to dumog, I would still have to say that it would likely compliment my mentality for a street savy grappling method. Not that BJJ isn't good. I have several peers with BJJ experience. I just find the subtleties more funcitonal. Much like Catch, wherein unexpected locks, controls can be applied to the most uncommon places on the body.

ooh, kining dumog grappling ghapon. dumog layog, kinomutai, pinaakay, kinusiay etc..
the problem with these is that theres nobody teaching, and as far as i know there is no formal "curriculum".

but grappling is grappling be it brazilian, indian pinoy etc.

a mount is a mount, a side mount is a sidemount, a guard is a guard.

BD, wa ni formal system nga pede iapil sa mga tournaments because ang type sa grappling is hugaw pa sa ubang ground fighting. Pero naay mga dumogero nga nagtudlo sa mga potential mma fighters - combinations of safety fighting and slightly dirty fighting in the ring. Pero, sa akoa lang... I like dumog... my former teacher was from Kalibo, Aklan... and I mean he was very good.

i'd stick to BJJ if i want to grapple and get a submission. proven naman god effectiveness niya sa grappling og sa MMA.

effectiveness sa streetfight? we'll never know which MA is better in streetfights. all we can do is prove it in MMA tournaments. and thats what Rorion Gracie did in 1992. He proved to the world that BJJ is better than karate, TKD, pancrase (ken shamrock), Kung Fu (jason de lucia) in any weight class. but now, most MMA fighter has BJJ background so now it depends on the fighters strength, endurance, speed to determine the outcome of the fight. ex. Royce vs Matt hughes this is BJJ vs BJJ, Matt won, he obviously was the stronger one.

with regards to dumog, unless there will be a Dumog fighter that will fight in fearless, URCC or local MMA. we will never know its effectiveness in MMA. but as of now, local fighters from Deftac Negros topteam are the ones dominating local MMA and they are practicing BJJ.
