Gigabyte teases near final G1.Assasin 2 X79 motherboard by VR-Zone.com
We already got a
sneak peek at the Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2 X79 motherboard along with Gigabyte's other X79 boards from IDF, but now the company is showing off teaser pictures of what should be near a final product on its Facebook page. Nothing much appears to have changed in terms of the board layout, although several SATA ports are missing thanks to Intel's X79 chipset snafu.
The big news is that Gigabyte has overhauled the chipset heatsinks to something more akin to its previous G1 boards, although we're looking at an entirely new heatsink design. The VRM cooler appears to have a machinegun barrel type design, whereas the X79 chipset itself is covered by a handgun with a beret carrying gold skull with a knife in its mouth. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but at least the heatsinks are unique in their own right.
It looks as if the board will get a total of eight SATA ports, with a Marvell controller adding two SATA 6Gbps ports to the two SATA 6Gbps port and four SATA 3Gbps ports provided by the chipset. As we mentioned back at our IDF preview, it appears that the G1.Assasin 2 is sporting USB 3.0 host controllers from Fresco Logic, although the new pictures don't add any more clarity to this. We'll see if any other changes have been made by the time the board launches, which should be in less than a months' time, although we'll hopefully be able to get a preview of the board before then.
