Default Photographer Looking For People to Do Their Job Without Pay

    by scottbourne

Someone sent me this – it is from a real CraigsList ad that ran in Atlanta. This is a follow up to yesterday’s GoingPro guest post by Joe Farace. Think about it – can you name any other job where everyone is expected to work for free?

“I am a photographer and since people are always looking for free shoots I assume that they must also do their job, or provide their services, for free.

I am looking to hire all types of people to do all sorts of jobs for me, as long as I do not have to pay anything. Just think, you will gain more experience, and I will put the word out for you and let everyone know what wonderful work you do. This opportunity will bring you a ton of unpaid work, but everyone will love you. So if you have a job or service you provide, and will do it for free, please let me know, because I am sure I have work for you and will hire you in a second.

Feel free to email me with the service you can provide, when you can start, and please include references.

I look forward to your free service.

    Thanks,

A society where everything is free can work and will thrive. Free food, free services, free medicines free technology, free everything. Farmers work and provide food for free, they get free services from doctors, drivers, schools... doctors treat everybody for free they get free food and services from others as well. Money isnt really necessary. Only resources and manpower are.

When we put money in the equation, it complicates everything. We now consider not doing the job we actually want to do because it pays less than what we need/want. We'd sometimes rather work for the jobs we dont want to do or even hate because we get the pay we need. Ma pugos n lang tag trabaho bisan walay gana tungod kay kinahanglan ang kwarta. Unya bati ra ba atong output basta wala tay gana, stressed, depressed pa ta. Pero kung ganado, nindot atong trabaho, happy pa. So why not take money out of the equation and let everybody be happy doing the jobs they love without having the pressure/burden of earning enough to pay bills knowing everything is free anyway?

Just dreaming. Pero nindut kung matinood. Now back to reality.. hehe

ideal as it is... the thing is what will determine how much "free service" you can get from someone. it would still be governed by something if not physical money.

but this article is not about living in that kind of society. it's about living in today's society yet people expect photographers to give their work for free.... and nothing in return except for the so called "exposure". there are popular glossy magazines who want you to work for free in return for a "photo credit"

it's happened to me lots of times. one example is the Hilton in Mactan. after negotiation the marketing manager asked why not I just do it for free? they'll tell people of my excellent service. I told them no. then later during the middle of the shoot he tried to get me to lower my rate 50%.

this is different from exchange deals where you get something of equivalent value in return for your service. though I recommend going at least 50% in payment and 50% exchange deal. exchange deals still won't pay the bills.

exactly. what i said only works if "everybody" does "everything" for free. and it's only theoretical and far from reality.

in your case with hilton though, "exposure" isnt fair trade as you have much of it already. hehe.
