Leaked AMD roadmaps suggests Llano replacement in Q1'12 by VR-Zone.com
If what appears to be a legit leak of a mobile product roadmap from AMD is the real deal, then we can expect Llano's replacement, Trinity, to arrive in Q1 next year. As with Llano, Trinity will have four different main SKUs, although so far no specific models are listed. Trinity will be based on AMD's new Pilderiver core which is derived from Bulldozer, the same core which we'll see in the soon to launch AMD FX series of CPUs.
The platform will be known as Comal and initially it'll co-exist with the Sabine platform which is the current mobile Llano APUs combined with the A70M and A60M chipsets. Comal will continue to use the same chipsets and as far as we can tell, the same socket. We'll also be seeing improved graphics, currently codenamed London. Beyond that, details are very sketchy, but what we do know is that the TDP will remain the same as for the current APUs.
Later next year we'll see the introduction of Wichita and Krishna, both part of the Deccan platform. Both SKUs will feature Bobcat core, i.e. the same CPU cores as AMD current Zacate and Ontario entry level APUs. However, the graphics core will be the same as for Trinity, albeit we'd expect to see far fewer shader units compared to Trinity. Interestingly AMD has developed a new FCH for Wichita and Krishna called Yuba which incorporates two SATA 6Gbps ports, two USB 3.0 ports, 10 USB 2.0 ports, 4 PCI Express x1 lanes, a built in SDHC controller and various other basic chipset features. Yuba will replace the A50M FCH in this product category. The Deccan platform should launch sometime in Q2 next year.
As for the "ultra low power" segment we're looking at Hondo, a next gen Desna APU which brings the power down from 5.9W to 4.5W. Honda incorporates two Bobcat cores, the same Loveland graphics as the current range of entry level APUs and the same FT1 BGA package. The platform will be known as Brazos T and as AMD is targeting tablets, we'll be seeing a new FCH here too, called A55T. The A55T is a very small and simplified FCH with a single SATA port, SDIO support and eight USB 2.0 ports.
The roadmap also contains some details of what AMD is planning for 2013. At the top we have Kaveri which is Trinity's replacement which will feature Steamroller CPU cores and a yet unknown graphics core. Below that we have Kabini which will feature Jaguar cores, a feature it shares with the tablet friendly Samara APU. Kaveri will be teamed up with the Bolton FCH, while Kabini gets the integrated Yangtze FCH and finally Samara will feature the integrated Salton FCH.
Let's hope AMD can deliver on this roadmap, as this year has been a bit of a disaster for AMD. That said, at least for next year we should be looking at 32nm parts and by then AMD and Global Foundries should've gotten yield rates up to expected levels. With a Bulldozer core at the heart of Trinity we should also see a decent jump in raw CPU performance over Llano and its aging Husky cores.
