If recent developments are anything to go by, the next SSD battlefield is mSATA and OCZ is getting ready to join Intel, Sandisk, Kingston and several other companies with a couple of new products line that might prove to be popular in the upgrade market and possibly even with notebook manufacturers. OCZ new Nocti and Strata series of mSATA SSDs should arrive later this month and we're looking at a pair of very different solutions here.

First up we have a return of Indilinx with the good old Barefoot controller, although the Strata series mSATA SSDs seems to be using a slightly different version called Barefoot ECO. The Strata series will come in a 30GB model with read speeds of up to 125MB/s and write speeds of a mere 40MB/s and a 60GB model with read speeds of up to 130MB/s and write speeds of 85MB/s. Fairly modest performance, but the 30GB can manage 11,000 IOPS in 4K random reads whereas the 60GB model up this to 12,000 IOPS. Sadly both drives are suffering on the write side with the 30GB model delivering a very slow 750 IOPS and the 60GB delivering 1,500 IOPS.



The Nocti series sports a SandForce SF-2141 or SF-2181 controller and is available in 30, 60 and 120GB sizes, all offering sequential read speeds of up to 280MB/s, with the 30GB model delivering write speeds of up to 255MB/s and the other two models coming in slightly faster at 260MB/s. The 4K random read performance is disappointing here though with the 30GB model only managing 6,000 IOPS and the other two models ending up in-between the two Strata drives at 11,500 IOPS. On the upside, the 4K random write performance is said to be much better at 12,500 IOPS for the 30 and 60GB models and 32,000 IOPS for the 120GB model.



Both the Strata and Nocti series support TRIM and use 2Xnm NAND Flash. For those lucky enough to have an mSATA in their notebook, an upgrade to one of these models will add a mere 6g of weight to the notebook. Sadly there's no word on pricing as yet, but we're going to try and get them in for a review as soon as they're officially announced.
