Default How to get sharp shots with a 50mm 1.8D

Hi guys,I have a Nikkor 50mm 1.8D mounted on my D3100 and I've been using it for a while now for portraits. However, I still can't seem to get that really sharp shot. My usual settings are ISO 100 @ F1.8 and F2.8 in aperture prio mode. Could this be the reason why some of my shots are not that sharp? What settings should be appropriate for portrait shots to get that correct sharpness? Thank you guys.

    Try this:
    1. Set the aperture to the 50mm's "sweet spot". Usually this is from f/5.6~8.0
    2. Check your shutter speed. It must be greater or equal than your focal length
    multiplied by the lens' crop factor. So, 50mm x 1.5 = 75.
In this case, try to set a shutter speed greater than or equal to that value above.
    I recommend at least 1/125.
    3. Breathing technique or use a tripod

I think if mag-IS100 ka, dapat hayag gyud ang scene. Try ISO200 - ISO400.
Nindot naman ang noise handling sa mga bag-o nga camera karon.

Also, wait for the green light inside the viewfinder to turn on when focusing before taking the shot. The light indicates that your subject is at it's sharpest focus.

If kaya sa imong budget, sell your D and buy the G version so that you won't have to manual focus.

Bro, you get blurry images because you have to focus the lens manually, which is very cumbersome especially to motor less DSLR cameras. I meant the D3100 does not have a built-in motor that would allow the camera to focus old nikon lenses like the 50mm that you have.

Unlike old film slr cameras, they have some thing like this on the viewfinder:

That aids the man behind the camera to focus on a subject. You can put this kind of viewfinder in your D3100 but I'm not going to recommend that you would. You either buy a camera that has a built-in motor and keep the 50mm or replace the 50mm with a 35mm and keep your camera.

thank you so much for the responses guys. I have more questions, unsa nag hyperfocal distance technique and kanang green light sa viewfinder is that the same as the red light when you have an AF lens on? when can you see that, when half pressed ang shutter button?
