Default Cebuano Should Have Been The National Language

Today, we are celebrating Buwan ng wika or shall we call it buwan sa pinulongan.

But, there is one fact that has cannot be denied and the Tagalogs are trying to hide to almost all of us. That their language is just a substrate or a variance of our language.

Way back during the occupation of the Sri Vijaya conquest, they also brought with them the austronesian language. We have different variants of the austronesian language. And since they came from the south, to be specific in Indonesian archipelago, their migration is from south to north. Since they are a people who travel so much, this language became the dominant language of commerce. That is why we have learned of our trade contacts with Thai in Cebu during the pre-colonial times. You can refer to the annals of Pigafetta for his vivid description of the port of Cebu with its contacts to some Asian nation.

The Cebuano culture is one of the most dominating culture. It is not only that, it is also the most influential person in terms of trade and commerce in the area. Humabon is not only a known chieftain of Cebu, he is also the de facto ruler. There is no reason why Kulambu, who is the chieftain of Masau or Limasawa island, referred Magellan to Humabon who is more influential.

When Magellan came here in 16th century, he knew who he has to collaborate with. That is why he was referred to Humabon who is so influential in the island.

With the influence of Humabon, we can conclude that the Cebuano culture is the dominant culture and that all culture in the nearby islands springs from it. This is the logical process as the Indonesian dwellers are coming southward in the forms of Balangay. Most probably they are the remnants of the old culture of Indonesia who does not want to be part of the new faith. out of fear from the Muslims, these proto-Cebuanos escape through their balangays to the northern land and found their refuge their. In this lands flourished our belief which is Indian in origin and our faith in Bathala.

We can conclude that since they are moving towards north, then, Tagalog would become a local version of Cebuano language. Hence, it is just a form of Cebuano language that has evolved itself into another language. However, Tagalog is language is a corrupted Cebuano language. One example is that they get rid of Bana as the word for husband and call both as asawa. Bana is an Indian origin and it is quite surprising that when you ask what Bana is in hindi or urdu, it has the same meaning as ours.

Moving ahead, the Cebuano culture embraced Spanish and from there we almost forget ourselves. Good thing Spanish language is not imposed and we still use the same language that our ancestors are using.

My intention of disclosing this is that we have a language which is just a substrate of our own and was claimed to be a major one. I would proudly say that Cebuano language should take the place of Tagalog as national language. Through our language, we have established what it is to be a true bloodied native in these lands and through that language we have distinguished ourselves from our colonizers.

    i love this....very awakening!
cebuano jud dapat ang national langauage dili ang tagalog!

It's very true kitang mga bisaya kasabot ug lain-laing dialect or even foreign language kung gustuhon jud nato na makat-on
mao nay naka-advantage nato pero ang mga tagalog basic bisaya words ra ang nahibaw-an or the question is nasabtan pud ba kaha na nila na mga words!!

Buwan ng wika did not even incorporate the Bisaya language. I ask you this, back in elementary/high school, why aren't we allowed to speak in Bisaya when its the Buwan ng Wika? Why do we get minus points or worse, punished when we don't speak a language other than tagalog?

I hate to say that the "Buwan ng Wika" is nothing but to discriminate the rest of the language in the country and praise the Tagalog language. Back in my younger days, I am still about to hear a Bisaya song being played in that month.

We Cebuanos should make an uprising not just limited to the citizens of Cebu but to the Bisaya speakers as well, make our own month and call it "Buwan sa Pinulongan". There in that month, anybody who speaks in Tagalog and in English needs to be kicked in the ass. The same should go to the rest of the local language like Waray, Ilocano, Javacano, etc...
