Hong Kong scientists 'show time travel is impossible' - Yahoo! News

Hong Kong physicists say they have proved that a single photon obeys Einstein's theory that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light -- demonstrating that outside science fiction, time travel is impossible.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology research team led by Du Shengwang said they had proved that a single photon, or unit of light, "obeys the traffic law of the universe".

"Einstein claimed that the speed of light was the traffic law of the universe or in simple language, nothing can travel faster than light," the university said on its website.

"Professor Du's study demonstrates that a single photon, the fundamental quanta of light, also obeys the traffic law of the universe just like classical EM (electromagnetic) waves."

The possibility of time travel was raised 10 years ago when scientists discovered superluminal -- or faster-than-light -- propagation of optical pulses in some specific medium, the team said.

It was later found to be a visual effect, but researchers thought it might still be possible for a single photon to exceed light speed.

Du, however, believed Einstein was right and determined to end the debate by measuring the ultimate speed of a single photon, which had not been done before.

"The study, which showed that single photons also obey the speed limit c, confirms Einstein's causality; that is, an effect cannot occur before its cause," the university said.

"By showing that single photons cannot travel faster than the speed of light, our results bring a closure to the debate on the true speed of information carried by a single photon," said Du, assistant professor of physics.

"Our findings will also likely have potential applications by giving scientists a better picture on the transmission of quantum information."

The team's study was published in the US peer-reviewed scientific journal Physical Review Letters.

I dont think time travel is possible for now.. I'm not a scientist but am open to any possiblity for time travel perhaps in the future ..

bisag unsaun, di jud ta maka-travel..

Elements has weight, Speeding upto near speed of light would mean, you'll be banging yourself on it, or maybe the spaceship will be used..

    Simple analogy:
Try beaming a flashlight on any object.
Imagine you're weight is in that beam hitting such object with that great great speed...
    Imagine the outcome.

Dli ko scientist, pro sure ko nga dli jud possible ang time travel. We're not living in a world where lives are running on a recorded video where we can just press the "forward" button to go a specific time.

    Einstein proposed time traveling sah?...
or naa pa lain before niya?... It was in our physics subject, but I'm not too attentive...

If we time travel, I think dili makaya sa atoa lawas.
I think we would die or just perish...

    This post supports my sticky:

    https://www.istorya.net/forums/scienc...torya-net.html

And thus, after this declaration by the HK physicists, any further threads created that discusses time-travel in a manner which makes it more like a movie discussion (i.e. trying to make it seem "real" when the current laws of physics and nature demonstrate that it can't be done) will be closed in the same light as how I close threads pertaining to FTL. You may however, continue discussing it in a purely academic manner, and if it strays, it shall be closed.

If naa nay naka-discover ug time machine in the very far future, naa na untay time traveller nga ni-balik during the time of Ancient Egypt or probably in our time.

Or, are we gonna believe that Egypt was designed by futuristic humans? or that charlie chaplain video, with a guy holding a Nokia cellphone?

time travel.. i like the thought of it but daghan pa kaau na ug batikos... or shall I say for now gravely impossible. To even travel to a speed of light or more is way impossible.. but i like to have an open mind anyway.

it is not time travelling bro, stasis manang imong gipasabot..
Basa: Stasis ( /ˈsteɪsɪs/), or hypersleep, is a science fiction concept akin to suspended animation. Whereas suspended animation usually refers to a greatly reduced state of life processes, stasis implies a complete cessation of these processes, which can be easily restarted or restart spontaneously when stasis is removed. Depending on the work of fiction in which it is depicted, stasis has particular properties useful to science fiction storylines.
