    Default What is there really about HTML handcoding?

    .. that sets a web designer apart from the WYSIWYG designers? Oh well, if you read most of available jobs here in the US they always prefer those who can handcode HTML, makes you not wanna ignore the hassle of learning the simple task of reviewing your html knowledge, that is if you've become too used to WYSIWYG (editors) like Dreamweaver or Frontpage to build websites.

    Hiring managers always prefer designers who can handcode, I think it only really makes a little time difference, because them can just pull out the website on the server and make some changes right then and pooof! Done! And also another fact is, these editors are limited at times, you really need to tweak your code to get much of what needs to be done or what your website needs to look like. Do you agree?

    A designer who can't do HTML without a WYSIWYG editor is not a designer. When these editors find a way to output clean, valid code, then maybe they might be called legitimate designers. Plus ... editors are limited by the fact that they can only do what they have been programmed to do ... one cannot design out of the box. They are also very poor in technologies that have become integral parts of the web ... CSS, XHTML, Javascript, PHP, ASP, etc. The web is no longer just HTML ... and hasn't been for years. People believe these editors make things easier and faster when all they do is complicate what is simple and beautiful.

    You showed a demo to a client using a laptop, then the client asked you to make changes on the samples... you opened the source file using only a notepad. right there and then, no fancy software, no time consuming software splash screen preloadings... just notepad... now thats impressive.

    Flash documents aren't included in this situation, but when i was working with styleassembly before, we were used to having last minute changes on multimedia presentations. i have tried editing flash presentations on the spot, minutes before the event starts. and it feels good after hehehe... it gives good reputation to the company.. and to you yourself. so it makes you their secret weapon.

    It's always good to know how to handcode stuff, coz it gives you more edge.
    Like in any market, a handcrafted persian carpet is more expensive than a machine weaved ones.

    I admit I use wysiwyg editors. competition is tough nowadays. if you handcoded all your projects, its either you were born rich or your last name is synonymous to gucci.

    i was never a fan of html editor. its always good to do it the hard-way, its one way of polishing your skills.

    I would prefer notepad, or very simple html editor that does syntax highlighting.

    Try making a simple web page using Microsoft Word then look at the complex and dirty code it generates. It inserts tons of extra id tags and properties to make sure your design appears the same in browsers as it does in MS Word. The file size then becomes oversized, taking more time to load on line.

    Handcoded HTML with CSS are lean and fast. If things go wrong, the bug is easily caught because the coder knows what he's done in the first place. If a style needs to be changed, it is usually done by rewriting only a portion of the code, because the rest is linked to it. WYSIWIG editors tend to isolate every object and its corresponding properties, making it difficult to get a consistent design.

    Skillled hand-coders still use WYSIWIG to get things done faster. They shift between code and WYSIWIG depending on which is a faster way at the moment, alert on keeping the code clean and well-structured in the process. Adobe GoLive and Macromedia Dreamweaver are good at this type of workflow.

    When I was still designing websites, I refrained from using ANY WYSIWYG editor since mode of them insert useless codes and makes the code less effecient. Heck, I wrote HTML, JavaScript and ASP codes with nothing but a notepad. At least until dreamweaver 4 came out.

    There's nothing slicker than a nice clean code.

    it's always best to learn html coding than depending on IDEs, you'd understand the interal workings of it. however.. there is one advantage that IDEs have over handcoding.. you never have to work your ass off when you're doing nested tables. back when IDEs were nonexistent, that was the number 1 headache for people who use html.

    IDE != WYSIWYG editors.
