MANILA, Philippines - Members of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) stormed Manila Zoo Friday morning calling for the closure of the country's oldest and largest zoo.
The clamor came after photos of the poor state of animals and cages in the zoo made the rounds of the
Internet.
The photos showed pens littered with trash, as well as emaciated animals. Some had wounds that looked like they haven't been treated in a while.
The alarming photos prompted Malacañang to order the Bureau of Animal Industry to take action.
Showbiz personalities even trooped to the zoo on Thursday after seeing the photos.
But as it turned out, the photos were taken at least a year ago.
The blogger who posted them has declined to face the camera.
Despite the admission, PETA has set up an online petition to shut down the zoo.
"Ang mga zoo kahit na paano mo siya tignan, hindi pa rin ito ang natural na tirahan ng mga hayop. Hindi nabibigay sa kanila ang kanilang pangangailangan," said Katrina Lugartos, campaigner of PETA.
The Manila Zoo management for its part continues to assert that changes to improve the conditions of the animals are already being undertaken.
It added that the wounded animals were given to them by their owners for treatment, while the ostrich with a tumor has already died.
"Huwag magdumi. 'Yon lang ang pakiusap namin sa mga visitors ng zoo," said Dr. Donald Manalastas, chief of the Zoological Division of Manila Zoo.
Management said 70% of the renovations in the zoo are complete.
